Five Bells by Kenneth Slessor, is one of my favourite pieces of writing. It’s always influenced how I ride a ferry on Sydney Harbour, where my thoughts go, how I smell the harbour, how I perceive its colour and it’s depth. It’s always made me think of that vision you have when you open your eyes underwater and look skywards. How that would look at night as you loose your compass for which way is up. I’ve written a string quartet influenced by Five Bells, that was very kindly played by Jo Sadler and friends without rehearsal one day years ago. It worked, I think. I’d love to hear it again one day.
This short piece of writing was in an exhibition I was apart of at Tin Sheds in Sydney in 2009. Another fragment of the five bells in me.
